Luxury Indexes

There's a new index fund available for those interested in luxury good and lifestyle. Several companies have or are looking into creating a luxury index. There's Merrill Lynch's ML LifeStyle Index, Deutsche Boerse's World Luxury Index, and now a new index from Robb Report. One requirement is that the index be made up of major U.S. or global developed-market exchange, and equities must have a market capitalization at or above $500 million. In some people's opinion, these are not strict enough guidelines for what should make up a luxury index. In fact, the Wall Street Journal suggested that the definition of luxury is "stretched" with some funds because of equities like Gap and Fossil in the mix. The Robb Report index fund includes such brands as LVMH, Richemont and PPR, Hermes, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren, Saks, Nordstrom, Tiffany & Co. and Harry Winston. It even comprises liquor companies and financial institutions UBS, Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse.
